This Took Some Getting Used To

When I graduated from college last 2007, I didn’t know the importance of dressing up well for work. Although I am fond of being in several experimental and trendy outfits back in college, I was not the person who has corporate attires in tow. In fact, I was a jeans and shirt type of girl.

When I started working, I didn’t grasp the concept of dressing in a corporate or smart-casual manner. Maybe it’s because I worked in a publication that time, and publications often have loose dress codes.

Noticing that I often go to work in tank tops and even in my Havis, one of my first bosses reminded me on the importance of being ready in terms of how I present myself. He told me that yes, I can wear jeans, tank tops, shirts, and even slippers, but I just have to make sure that in case an emergency meeting or training comes up, I have something to wear over those things. I mean, a blazer and pair of reserved flats will do.

From then on, I slowly made my way into appreciating smart casual attires, much more when I transferred to another job and worked as an Account Executive.

That job required me to always be at my best, due to unexpected client meetings. I, for sure, didn’t want to be dragged by my boss in a meeting wearing clothes that I know aren’t presentable enough.

Suffice to say, working for marketing and sales did me good. Now, dressing up like this comes naturally. Without effort, if I must say, which for me is a definitely good thing.

Although some people might regard this for being too dressy, especially when my work now entails sitting in front of the computer for eight hours, I don’t really mind. I love being in good clothes. :)

So, if I may give a piece of advice to my ladies out there who feel a bit awkward dressing up, just go with it. Wear happy, beautiful clothes. Do not let anyone dictate what you should wear. And eventually, you’ll get the hang of it, dressing up will be a breeze.
